Abstract

The global spread of English has arisen from a host of historical, political and socioeconomic factors. Many European and Southeast Asian societies, with their respective socioeconomic contexts, are often infused with a desire for development, modernity, and human resource capital for successful participation in the new economic order worldwide. English is very often considered to be the indispensable medium for bringing in development. Hence, in many Southeast Asian societies today, serious government attention is given to promoting English- medium education. It is believed that using English as the language of instruction in content subjects (e.g. Mathematics,Science,History) can facilitate English learning. Nonetheless, in those non-English speaking countries (i.e. EFL contexts), the cultural capital of English proficiency is often not evenly distributed across the society and it is common to see students with limited English proficiency struggling when learning English and academic content simultaneously. This calls for more carefully designed curriculum and pedagogy to provide sufficient scaffolding for EFL students, especially in terms of the development of their L2 academic literacies, which is essential for success in bilingual education.

This two-part seminar attempts to integrate theories and practices related to biiinguai education and academic literacies, with interactive hands-on activities and discussion. In the morning session, the speakers will introduce the rationales, principles and practices of different approaches to bilingual education, including content-based instruction (CBI), content and language integrated learning (CUL), immersion programmes and English-medium education .The different contexts in which these different approaches have been developed will also be discussed with a view to adapting them to different pedagogical contexts.

The afternoon session will then explore "academic literacies",by highlighting the characteristics of academic language and asking participants to analyse the texts in their own disciplines. After raising participants' language awareness, the speakers will introduce "genre-based pedagogy" and "language across the curriculum", which aim to assist students in learning academic content
in English.
